Photo - Etchings
Photo-Etching is a simple term for a complex method, which in turn produces a simple and beautiful photographic print.
The method (photo-gravure) was created in the 1850's and went on to become the premier method of printing photographic images, before being all but forgotten. If you'd like to view some samples of photo-etchings click here.
We work from a digital file, creating a full size transparency to expose it to a printing plate, traditionally copper, the plate is then etched to leave it pitted with recesses to hold ink. After hand inking and wiping the plate is pressed against, and into, a sheet of dampened etching paper and run through a hand press to create the print.
